Two Options To Consider For A Home Security System

If you want to make your home safer, you might plan for a security system. These involve many elements, such as CCTV, alarms, lighting, and locks. Here's an overview of CCTV and alarm options.

CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television)

A closed-circuit television system consists of several security cameras that you install around your home. Typically, you will fit the cameras at the points of entry, such as the front and back doors, as well as the garage. One benefit of outdoor cameras is that they work as a deterrent to burglars, who will see the cameras at the front of the house and in other prominent spots.

These systems allow you to watch a live feed, which you can view on the associated phone app. Plus, they provide you with recordings that can be investigated by the police or others if a crime happens. You can monitor who's approaching the front door to deliver a parcel or see if a stranger is wandering around the house perimeter.

You can also establish cameras inside. While these can capture criminals in action, they can also allow you to ensure household members are safe. Discuss the placement of the cameras with a security expert. The cameras can be connected in different ways. A contractor can hardwire them to the controller in the house, or you can install a WiFi system. This option may be best if the wiring is difficult to retrofit in an existing home.

Alarm Systems

An alarm system, another security option, will let you know if someone attempts to enter your house. Alarm systems can use different triggers. They can use motion detectors to activate the alarm. Some sensors can discern the movement of a small animal, such as a pet cat or dog, and not send an alert. You should check if you have a pet about the sensitivities of any system you install.

Alarm systems can also rely on another mechanism, such as reed switches. These are magnetic contacts that are attached to windows and doors. The system can sense when the contact is broken by the window or door opening, which thus sets off the alarm.

The most effective alarms are back-to-base systems. These not only alert you, but they let a central security unit know as well. Someone from there may then contact you to discuss what actions you want to take. They could send a security person to check your property or call the police, for instance. CCTV footage will provide a clearer idea of what is happening and what response is needed.

You can put stickers explaining an alarm is installed on the windows to deter criminals from attempting a break-in. If the home security alarm is not back-to-base, it may go off and you get an alert, but nothing else will necessarily happen in response. Hopefully, the burglar will be deterred from continuing.
